Hospice volunteers thanked by Mayor

Nine inspiring volunteers from St. Joseph’s Hospice were invited to a special volunteer celebration event at Bootle Town Hall on Monday (10th June) to receive a special commendation from the Mayor of Sefton, Cllr June Burns.

Chris Taylor, from Litherland, was presented with a certificate for ‘Outstanding Achievement’. Chris has volunteered for the hospice since 2003 and supports the fundraising team in many ways. Among other things, she washes and wraps hundreds of teddy bears for the hospice’s garden party every year and helps to sort the hospice’s collection boxes.

Lydia Moore, who became St. Joseph’s Hospice’s first volunteer ward clerk earlier this year, and Barry Cusack, who volunteers at the hospice’s Warbreck and Kensington shops, both received ‘Recognition of Support’ certificates.

During the event, thank you certificates were also presented to Karen Allen and Barbara McElroy, volunteer fundraisers; Liz Mercer, volunteer receptionist; Tom Davis, volunteer gardener; Janet Otterson, volunteer finance administrator; and Jan Jones, volunteer therapist.

Around 150 volunteers from 20 different organisations attended the Volunteer Celebration event, which was organised by Sefton CVS to mark Volunteer’s Week.

St. Joseph’s Hospice’s volunteer recruitment co-ordinator, Helen Pattie, attended the event to thank hospice volunteers for their help and support. She said: “The volunteer celebration event was fantastic and it was wonderful to hear so many inspiring stories. It’s always extremely hard to choose and nominate a small number of people from our amazing team of over 150 volunteers as they all deserve this recognition, from our administrators and gardeners to retailers and fundraisers.

“Volunteering is a wonderful experience and all our volunteers tell us how much they get out of it on a personal level.

“We’d like to thank all our volunteers and are looking forward to our own annual volunteer’s thank you evening in July when we reward and thank every single one of them for everything they do for the hospice.”
