Hospice celebrates inspiring volunteers

It’s Volunteers Week (1-7 June) and so, for the second week running, St. Joseph’s Hospice is highlighting some

of the inspirational volunteers it has at the hospice.

Over two hundred volunteers from across Merseyside give up their own time every week to support the work of the hospice, but it still needs more.

Joe Lee (71) has been volunteering as a gardener in the hospice grounds for three years, following the sad death of his sister, Frances, who was a patient at the hospice.

Joe takes great pride in looking after the grounds and particularly looking after the beautiful plants and pots, which are enjoyed by patients and their families all year round.

Joe’s wife, Thelma, used to help him out from time to time with the planting, but, sadly, she also passed away at the hospice in October last year and so it has been a very difficult time for him. However, he still finds volunteering very rewarding.

He said: “I get a great deal of satisfaction from the work I do and there is certainly a social side to volunteering which is a tonic in itself. Everyone is so kind and supportive. You do feel like you’re part of a close-knit community.”

Joe volunteers as and when he can so it’s completely flexible around him and his availability. He added: “I have three children, Janet, John and Stephen (who passed away in 2005). I also have seven grandchildren so I help out at the hospice when I can but I still have plenty of time to spend with my family and friends.”

The hospice is currently looking for volunteers to work in its ten charity shops across Merseyside. A typical shift lasts four hours, mornings or afternoons, but any time will be valued and appreciated. There are a variety of different roles available too.

The hospice is also looking for volunteers to help out in other ways and is particularly interested in the personal skills and experience of each individual.
